Here’s What’s Happening

There are two parts to the blog: Song Spotlights and Album Reviews. The song spotlights are typically connected to the albums I review. Be sure to check out “Rationale + Purpose” to discover why I’m bothering to do all of this!!

Song Spotlight:

This is probably my favourite part of the entire blog. This is where I INDULGE in vocalizing my own personal interpretations of and insert my own meaning into my favourite songs mwahaha. There are no rhyme or reason for how they are organized. They have a separate section because I just know that they are going to be sooo long and I just can’t sacrifice to the god of brevity in this instance. This is my platform and I will say as many things as I want about my songs damn it!!

Album Review (“Review” is a very loose term):

This section has a clear template. It goes as follows:

Album Name / Artist: Pretty self explanatory

Record Label / Release Date / Genre: Just giving credit where credit is due. ALSO, this is where I prove to you that I don’t ONLY listen to metal, although admittedly I listen to a lot of metal :)

How I was introduced: Music is a gift that is shared. There’s always that moment of seemingly “divine intervention” where we are initially exposed to sounds that we don’t know at the time will eventually be LIFE CHANGING. Maybe. I am extremely fond of reminiscing so this is sheer indulgence for me.

Place in life when I first listened: This part is very important (in my mind) for the whole “making-connections” part. We make connections between events and songs on a subconscious level. Although generally the music we hear is at random, I personally am convinced that certain music comes into our lives for a reason. This is where I attempt to make sense of that “reason.”

Synopsis / Themes: This is the only “real” review-y section in my “album reviews”... Really what I’m trying to do here is paint a picture of what the album sounds like so you get something a little more concrete than just my absent-minded rambling :)

Glimmers of Gold: The intention of this section is to highlight some of the more meaningful lyrics scattered throughout the album. We are all human and we express things and truths (or what we perceive to be truths) imperfectly. Obviously. When I recommend an album (as I implicitly am by reviewing them), I’m not claiming that they are all good. They’re all riddled with holes. I emphatically disagree with many of the concepts or ways of thoughts presented by basically every artist that I listen to. HOWEVER. That fact does not hinder me in the slightest from engaging in the music (unless they’re explicitly demonic, I do have a line). This is basically the entire point of this blogging venture-- to uncover the truths and yearnings for the infinite and general good that is ever present within any artistic expression. Hence my “glimmers of gold/God.” As an important formator in my life once said, “sometimes you have to spit out the seeds when eating the watermelon.” Meaning that something can be inherently good, even if it’s there’s some unsavory parts to it. I’ve carried that statement close to my heart, because isn’t that what God does with us? He embraces us and chooses to love us even if we are more seeds than watermelon. So here we are. Attempting to showcase the watermelon. And celebrating great music.

Personal Thoughts / Meaning: This is just where I try to tie up all the loose ends somehow! It’s up to you whether I succeed or not!
